I'm less pissed he left and more pissed that we didn't get anything for him. We should have moved him for a high pick last year.

Two names that I want are Dan Williams and Buster Skrine. Maxwell is going to want a ridiculous CB contract that he won't live up to, so I will pass. Skine has developed into a veryy nice CB in Cleveland, and would be a great pairing with Slay. Then you resign Mathis to a vet minimum deal to take the slot duties once Bentley gets hurt again. I agree that Maxwell will get far more $$$ than he deserves, and I'm with you on Skrine (the Browns secondary has been really underrated the last few seasons); though I want nothing to do with Mathis playing the slot. He was really good last year on the outside, but imagining him trying to keep up with the Randall Cobbs and Julian Edelmans of the world wouldn't be pretty. Skrine is much more suited to be a nickel than Mathis, IMO. Speaking of slot receivers, I'd like to see the Lions bring one in either through FA or the draft. You could pick up a veteran on the cheap like Eddie Royal or Lance Moore (I'm guessing Cecil Shorts will be too expensive), or spending a 4th/5th rounder on a guy like Tyler Lockett from KSU (who could also return kicks for you).

Which sucks because 33 year old stafford can't possibly be better than current stafford. Franchise Suh and at least there is one more year to look forward too. Now it is back to 10 years of awful play and probably 3 years in the ten of top 5 draft picks. That's funny because a 34 year-old Tony Romo just easily had the best season of his career and was way better than 27 year-old Romo. Do I think it's likely that Stafford eventually rounds the corner into the elite QB conversation? Nope. But I wouldn't put it out of the realm of possibility that Staffdong will be a better player in 6-7 years after he figures some shit out. Would people be losing their shit like this if Suh's suspension for the playoff game had been upheld?

Yes, but from all appearances, the Ravens aren't going to let his 16M cap hit fly this year. They are either going to sign him to an extension to bring his cap number down or they are going to release him.

Vince Wilfork to become an unrestricted FA. ( ESPN LINK) Good news for the Lions either way. Teams might be a little more hesitant to throw piles of money at Suh with both Wilfork and Ngata (expected) on the market, or it provides another quality replacement for the Lions to chase to help replace Suh. (Obviously, Wilfork or Ngata wouldn't be a long-term solution like Suh, but they can be a 2-3 year stop gap and allow the Lions more time to reconstruct that defensive line)

What brand? Being the dirtiest player? No one likes Suh outside of Detroit and Nebraska. He is a loathsome person not a media darling Tell that to Nike, Subway, Chrysler, etc... You don't have to be a good guy to be marketable.

From what I remember it was just pure media speculation I know Schefter has mentioned it:

It must suck to be a running back. You have 5-6 good years in you, then you get leprosy or cooties or something and no one wants to touch you with a ten foot pole.

I really like the Erik Cole move. You picked up a big and fast veteran with almost 20 goals this year for sliding down 20 or so picks in the second round and two non-GR prospects. Good work Kenny.

Flem and I are in lockstep on this one. You can't give Suh more than Brady or Aaron Rodgers combined no matter how good of a DT he is. If he wants to resign here at a feasable rate, super. If not, I'll take flyers on Fairley and Henry Melton from the Bears (both of whom are coming off injury and you can get on the relative cheap) and throw in a early pick at DT and go rotation heavy. That gives you more money to go find a 2nd corner next to Slay and a Nickel DB to cover the slot.
For all the talk last year of Suh being made a captain and a leader on the team, let's not kid ourselves... DeAndre Levy was and will be the heart, soul, and cornerstone of that defense. As long as he's on the field, our defense won't regress too much even without Suh.

I was at the game last night and holy crap -- the Pistons bench is poop. KCP was as streaky as ever, Tayshaun forgot how to shoot free throws while he was away, and Monroe was the only Piston who seemed to be able to score with consistency. The problem is that he is a liability almost everywhere else on the court.
Love Reggie Jackson though. Once him and Andre gain some familiarity with each other, it's going to be scary.

Most likely a running back they are trying to hype up like Ty Isaac or a defensive end like Taco Charlton.

I just hope Kenny sits on his hands like a good little GM this trade deadline. There's no one out there who would have an immediate impact on this team (ie, a first-line defenseman) and prices go sky high come deadline time.
Remember, a few years ago, Holland agreed to send Nyquist AND Tatar AND a first round pick (Mantha) to Calgary for Jay Bouwmeester, only to be turned downed by Calgary's GM. Last year he sent Calle Jarnkrok to Nashville for two months of human toilet paper in Legwand.
Keep rolling with the young guys.

Bears wanted to talk to Kubiak but he told them he's all set. That's a shame. He'd have been awful there.

I guarantee you they are not taking a TE in the first round. It will be someone on the offensive or defensive line... if there was a dark horse luxury pick would be a RB.

I like the wall idea. Sounds ambitious. Perhaps a moat would be more effective? I really hope I'm wrong and Suh signs a 6 year, $15 million per extension. Maybe the playoff loss gets to him and now he wants to buy in for the long haul? Maybe those press conference tears were real? But situations like this never seem to go the Lions' way... ever.

But the cap hit already is $0 for next season and, if Suh leaves via FA, they'll probably receive two 3rd-round compensatory draft picks from the league. It doesn't make much sense to me to throw your organization back onto the biggest hook in the pond unless you know for a fact that you can get more than two third round picks for him (which he is worth... But finding a team he wants to play for and getting fair compensation in return is a wet-dream scenario.)

He could, but I think if he has any long-term plans here in Detroit and wants to have a good team around him, he'd have signed a contract extension already. At 27 million, he'd make as much as Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers COMBINED next season. No team can win with one player making that much $$$.

No, I understand that it doesn't count against the cap right away until he signs the tender... My fear is that teams are going to balk at what Suh and his agent are looking for, refuse to give up that much $$$ AND compensation (draft picks) for him, and then Suh will be like "Fine, I'll play one more year in Detroit." and pocket $27 million and the Lions will be fucked next year.
Basically, I don't think there's any chance he signs a long-term contract extension with the Lions if they use the franchise tag on him.
And I'm sure there are 10 teams getting ready to offer Suh the moon... But how many of those teams are prepared to offer the Lions a first or second round pick? 1? Maybe 2? Surely, not all 10. And will Suh even want to play for those 1-2 teams? There are just too many ways that situation could go totally fucking sideways for the Lions.

It's to big of a risk to take. Giving Suh a contract compairable to Watt or McCoy with a defense that still has a few needs is just being desperate IMO.
You could easily take that money spread across the entire defense and be a better unit, instead of having a great DL with an subpar secondary.
I don't think you end up paying that. It goes back to what aaugusti posted. You franchise him and let his agent do the work. You get to match any deals if you want and if you don't want to you get compensation. What happens if you franchise him and then can't trade him? I can't imagine that the Lions are going to put the noose around their own necks and be on the hook for 27 mil next year if they can't agree to a long-term contract. They would have about 50% of the salary cap taken up between Suh, Staffdong, and Calvin.

I'd offer him 100 million for 6 years with 60 million guaranteed. (Gerald McCoy got 95 million for 6 years with 50 guaranteed earlier this year)
If he balks at that, then I'd let him walk and then take that money and make a run at Darrell Revis and bring back Fairley and draft a DT high.
