Here's an interesting online book on managerial tendencies. Gardenhire is mentioned as one of the least likely managers to call for a hit-and-run, and he ranks 14th all-time in terms of exceeding his team's win expectancy. The author says this is in part because the Twins won so many extra-inning games, which he credits to Gardenhire's ability to develop strong bullpens. Also interesting in that book is that Leyland is considered one of the worst managers in terms of individual pitchers getting better under him - although the data only runs to 2006.

I'm all for an analytically minded manager, but I think that stuff is a bit overblown. You could hire Saberbot 3000 and have it make the correct call based on percentages in every situation, and I don't think it would result in more than 3-4 extra wins. I'm not saying those 3-4 wins wouldn't potentially be huge, but I think fans sort of overestimate the importance of the tactical side of things, and vastly underestimate the value of having a manager who knows how to handle his team and get the most out of his players. Coaches are basically teachers hired to keep the order in a clubhouse filled with 25 ultra-talented players who might also be complete morons. I think the most important thing is to find a manager who commands respect, and is capable of inspiring his players to do their best. Also, it helps to have a hell of a lot of talent.

Logan Tuley-Tillman kicked off the team. Speculation is that it is due to hanging out with these gentlemen (he's in the flag shirt)

College basketball recruiting is so strange. Michigan lands top-100 PG Xavier Simpson from Ohio. That was fast.
Honestly, neither Winston nor Simpson look all that impressive to me, but whatever.

Cassius Winston no longer considering Michigan.
Love John Beilein, but I don't know what the deal is with him as a recruiter. He's obviously uncovered a ton of gems, and I'm not worried about the state of the program, but it's so strange that they can't seem to get ANY of the top guys they target. Bummer.

I actually thought the linebackers were a real problem in that game, particularly Bolden. I wouldn't be shocked to see him lose his gig to Ross at some point this year.

I think Michigan loses, but they play competent football, which is a huge win for me after the last seven years.

It's so odd that Deez Nuts became a thing again. We were all saying that back in middle school in like 1993.

I think harbaugh is sort of weird at times. I'll go a step further and say that he is very weird all the time. I got so caught up in the recruiting rankings and practice hype last year (I steadfastly predicted 10-2, like a jackass) that I don't give a shit what Harbaugh does, who he snubs, or which recruits he brings in. I only want to see the team get better as the season goes along, and I want a coaching staff that seems to have some clue how to make adjustments. RichRod's first season was a disaster and Hoke's was the luckiest year of all time. I just want competent football from Harbaugh's squad.

I went Tigers-free on my weeklong vacation, only to come back to watch the whole Texas series. Nice offense on this team... Without a doubt the most frustrating aspect of this team. The pitching just sucks, and that I can deal with, but the offense is just super annoying. It's a top-five offense with bottom-three baserunning, and an impressive ability to get picked off, get thrown out at home, and ground into double plays.

Wouldn't shock me if Harbaugh is somewhere on the spectrum, but I think most people are, actually. And it's not like it's some degenerative condition that will have an impact on his coaching. His history of success is all that matters.

It'll be interesting to see how it goes. The Royals don't walk or hit for power, really, but they also don't strike out much. If he can locate he should be able to get plenty of weak contact and limit damage.

I think the main benefit of adding a handful of prospects to the system will be felt this winter, when the Tigers probably make a trade to address some needs. They simply couldn't do it before, but maybe now they go get Bruce and Chapman from the Reds, or Kimbrel and Cashner from the Padres.

I think it's actually a really good return for two months of a rental outfielder. Fulmer throws in the low-to-mid 90s with an above average slider, and his curve and changeup are close to average. He's having a breakout year, and if he continues to get better he could potentially be a #3 starter. I wouldn't be shocked if he's in top 100 lists next season. The other kid also throws hard, and while his secondary stuff isn't great, he pounds the strike zone. Probably a reliever, but it's another nice arm to have.

It's an outstanding trade for the Tigers. Norris has the stuff to be a legitimate #2 starter, though it may take him 2-3 years to refine his command fully. Boyd isn't anything super special, but he instantly becomes the team's best option for a #5 starter, and he could be a little bit better than that, or be a solid reliever. And Labourt is a nice wild card. Has the stuff to be a top-100 prospect at this time next year. Could be a #3 starter, could be a setup man or closer, or he could be the key piece in another trade.
Best case scenario is the Tigers got 3/5 of their future rotation. Worst case is they all die in a torcano (tornado that flies over a volcano). Realistic bet is they got a good mid-rotation starter, a solid long reliever, and a nice trade chip. That's a great return for 2+ months of David Price. I could even look at it from a WAR perspective, if anyone is so inclined...The most the Jays can probably expect from Price is 3 WAR for the rest of this season, and that may be generous. If Norris reaches his ceiling, which is no sure thing, he'd be producing 3+ WAR every year, and the Tigers have him for the next 6 seasons.

Not selling guarantees this team will crater into fucking oblivion by 2017. I'm sure Dombrowski knows that...but I'm not sure if he cares. I think he's gone next year, and he's been told by Ilitch to go for it, no matter what. Worst case scenario for fans.

I don't blame him, I just think he is as bad as anyone on this team. He's Big Pasta, the manager version. I've just never seen a manager whose decisions end up wrong no matter if he goes by the book or goes off his gut, or whatever logic he uses. He's ALWAYS wrong. Yeah. I don't think anyone blamed him for the disaster in Minnesota, but otherwise he does seem to screw up everything. I think part of his reasoning last night may be related to the KC game where he got burned by pinch-running for V-Mart.

"this engine sucks, but don't sweat it because the tires are fucked anyway." That's about the size of it, though to me it's more like Ausmus is driving a car that's missing two wheels, and people are complaining about him leaving it in 3rd gear for too long.
