Verlander vows to be 'best pitcher' he can be in 2015 Detroit — Tigers president and general manager Dave Dombrowski got a text message from Justin Verlander prior to the Winter Meetings last week. "He said, 'I'm totally committed to being the best pitcher I possibly can,'" Dombrowski said. "He said, 'I was not happy with my year last year.'" Dombrowski's interpretation of that message, though, may be different than what Verlander intended. As he explained it, Dombrowski took that to mean Verlander was ready to commit to changing his style of pitching, to transition away from being a power pitcher. "Justin may not think this, but I don't think he's going to come out and throw 98-99 miles per hour on a regular basis," Dombrowski said. "But we never thought when we signed him long-term that he would continue to do that. He still throws plenty hard." link

This better mean he's made a commitment to roids for the remainder of this deal.

It's tough to know who will make up the bullpen at this point, but I think four guys are certain:
Nathan Soria Alburquerque Hardy
If Rondon and Hanrahan are actually healthy, they'll certainly be involved, and then maybe Ian Krol as a second lefty? They also have Alex Wilson, who they got in the Porcello trade, Luke Putkonen coming off an injury, Josh Zeid, who they claimed off Waivers from the Astros, the new 40-man add Angel Nesbitt, and all they guys they added to the 40-man last year, including Drew VerHagen, Kyle Lobstein, Kyle Ryan, Buck Farmer, Chad Smith, and Jose Valdez.
I'm not inspired by that group at all, but bullpens are so damn volatile that you never know how things are gonna work out.

Seems like as it sits, it's gonna hinge on Hanrahan and Rondon.
Get something from one, and things start to look better. Get something from both, especially if Hanrahan can come close to his pre-injury self, and the pen looks pretty good.

If the Tigers keep Scherzer do they trade Price for a couple very good relievers? I believe they need to do this for a shot at the World Series, because the bullpen needs serious upgrades and that is their best option. If they lose Scherzer & do not upgrade the bullpen they will be lucky to make the playoffs.

Is it odd that there has been very little news about Max Scherzer lately?

The next 6 weeks will be interesting in regards to Max watch. Surprised Boras hasn't been out selling him harder in public.

The Tigers signed LHP Tom Gorzelanny to a one-year deal. He was an average starter for several years before transitioning into a swingman, and eventually a full-time reliever. He's been very effective in that role over the last four seasons, and should be a solid lefty reliever for the bullpen.

I can't see the Tigers trading Price unless they sign Scherzer. That would be a really interesting scenario though.

I was not impressed with price. He seemed to be sulking about being in detroit.

I was not impressed with price. He seemed to be sulking about being in detroit. It was fully expected from him. He'll be fine. Most reports said he'd take awhile to adjust. That should help the Tigers resign him if they want to. He doesn't like change (not the best wording but you get the idea).

I don't like him. I'd rather have Max.

I hope they keep him even if they resign Max. Insurance if someone goes down next year.
