For those of you who started stronglifts 5x5, what weights did you start with for squat and bench. I understand they recommend starting with just the bar, but I do feel like I will look like a total ass doing that. That, and it will take a very long time to get up in weight. That said I don't want to kill myself and not make it through the first two weeks. I am no stranger to weightlifting but have not done so in 7-8 years. Something had to change, and that change starts now. I start in the gym tomorrow. But I really couldn't guess what a 5RM would be for me so there's that. Start light but not just the bar. I don't squat heavy myself, my current setup is a little sketchy for squats. Not knowing how much you can squat, it's hard to say. When I started up after my surgery I started with the bar and 2 25s and worked my way up from that. I'm doing 205 for 3 reps max now. But I try to focus on the lighter weights and better form/deeper squat over heavy weight.

I started with just the bar for everything but the deadlift, but I'm increasing by 10 lbs each workout. The last couple sets I do as many reps as I can since it is light. I think starting off light will pay off down the road. I want to be on this long term. I also lift at home so I don't care what I look like doing it.

Something had to change, and that change starts now. I start in the gym tomorrow. But I really couldn't guess what a 5RM would be for me so there's that. A couple of thoughts on this: 1) I know it doesn't always feel that way but no one cares what you're doing at the gym. That's a huge hurtle for most people, it was for myself as well, but don't go into it thinking anyone cares because they don't. Start with just the bar if you want to practice strict form and gradually add up from there. 2) You will have to use plates for Deadlifts and for that I would start with 35's but try to elevate those off the ground a little. Most people can start there but you could even give the 45's a shot but focus on form. The reason you won't want to use smaller plates or just the bar is that makes it even more difficult based on the deficit created from smaller plates. 3) I actually found that I really can't squat well with just a bar. I'm not saying load up 135 your first time and have at it, but I do find that having weight on my shoulders, even with warm-up's, helps me get loose as opposed to just the empty bar. My form is also better with some plates on there.

I am getting back in shape and have lost nearly 20 pounds since late November. I got really soft by being inactive for so long. Creeps up on ya..

Bike ride today. My knees hurt now. Took the new bike out for its maiden voyage today. Still getting the fit dialed in, but it's a zippy little ride. Legs felt good. Think I'm going to target a few century rides this summer and a triathalon in the fall. The tri has a kayak leg instead of a swim, which is easier to train for.

Last week all my workouts were shitty. I have been cutting and pretty strict on my calories and macros for the past 3 weeks. This weekend, I went ape shit on the eating, just eating everything I could get my hands on. So far this week the 2 workouts I've had, I've increased weight on everything with no problems. Crazy what a difference the extra calories make.

To echo a sentiment before... As a former Athletic Trainer and strength and conditioning coach who worked for 4 years at Lifetime Fitness (I know- try not to envy me too much)... No one notices or cares if you aren't lifting much weight. Where you catch everyone's eye is when you lift with horrible form (because you are trying to do more weight then you can handle).
I remember this one kid- had to be on the spectrum with an extra chromosome or two. He was from Novi and started coming to the gym when he was 17 or so. The kid became the joke of the gym and every trainer and therapist there tried to help him out at one point. He would lift like he was having a seizure with these spastic movements- while clenching his teeth, grimacing and grunting like someone was shoving a spiked watermelon up his ass. In example- he would load up 200lbs on a seated cable row and would do 3 sets of 8... Rowing and jerking his hole body to get it maybe a 1/4 of the way to his chest. I'm surprised he didn't blow out a disc.

Didn't care- you get used to it. It's kind of part of lifting

Last couple of weeks I have been benching lower weight for reps. Last time I benched 245 I almost didn't get it all the way back up and that got in my head, especially working out at home by myself. Like I said above my workouts last week were all shitty but after all that food this weekend I've been having good workouts this week. So last night I went at it hard on the bench, and I really had to pump myself up to get past that mental barrier while benching. It worked, had a good workout and benched 245 again with no problems. I'm hoping I'm not getting some kind of mental block with benching. I think I need to find a gym for benching to have a spotter help.

Definitely needs some track lighting. And maybe a disco ball.

Actually, after moving stuff around to where I've got everything now it's pretty well lit. I'm not going to bother with the lighting for now.

Didn't get my road bike until labor day bish I do 100 a week on my mtn bike, bish. 200 a week is an average training week on a road bike. I just noticed this fantastic call out.

I am getting back in shape and have lost nearly 20 pounds since late November. I got really soft by being inactive for so long. Creeps up on ya.. And lost another 20 on top of that to go down to 175 from about 220 and soft and fat as fuck. Done almost all through diet, and low impact cardio, maybe a mile a day everyday walking. You can't outrun a bad diet so don't count too much on extra activity to get you lean. This thread lacks pics, so here are progress pics as I have been back in the gym for 3 months after several years off... now I am bigger than I ever was before as a lot of it came back quickly, but at 6'3'' and lanky it takes a while to fill out my frame.
