Getting to be that time of year again. I'm closing in 600 miles of running and 200 miles cycling for 2014. My goal for 2015 is 1000 running / 500 cycling. I just registered for the Bayshore Half Marathon on Memorial Day weekend which should keep me motivated throughout the winter. I'll do the Detroit Half again also. I'd like to do my first 100k road biking event in the spring.

I've been heavy into lifting for over a year now, and I've had significant & noticeable improvement. I've probably lost 25 lbs of bad stuff and replaced it with 15 lbs of muscle. However recently I decided I wanted to attempt a tried and true program, so I've started this: stronglifts.com/5x5/Today was day 4. I'll stick through the 12 weeks for sure.

My wife and my orthopedic surgeon won't let me run anymore. My bike is all I have left. And that proved to be hazardous to my health recently.

I have been thinking about doing that stronglifts program myself. I tend to do too much when I lift and I've been thinking of just sticking to those basic body movements. Especially during the warm months when I'm working. I don't have time to do 10 different exercises each night and doing those core whole body movememnts appeals to me. The other thing I'm contemplating as soon as my convelescence is over is starting DDP yoga. I bought the program last year just never started it up. I hear so much good stuff about it I figure it couldn't hurt. Hoff, 200 miles a week is a lot on the bike. Yikes. Is that every day?

I usually did 50-75 on Saturday, 40-60 on Sunday, then 3-4 rides mid week between 30-60. That was on non-century weeks. During the summer, I do at least one century per month. usually on Saturdays. I also did the BTC for a few years. It's at the end of June. That was a supported tour in Colorado that was about 400 miles in a week.

I have no problem with that. Need to switch to a model where unhealthy people pay more. It's just a matter of defining unhealthy.

Healthier = cheaper from a health insurance/health care perspective. Defining unhealthy isn't too tough. We know what the ideal weight, BP, and Glucose levels are. My company already does this for a rebate on our health insurance premiums. I carry a pedometer, and download the data every night. It's a program administered by Virgin Healthmiles. There are other incentives. Once you hit a certain number of steps, they will reimburse you up to $30 per month for a gym membership.

I walk about 12 miles a day on average when we are working. I'd love for this to come to our health insurance, I'd clean up. And I carry my ipod every day that records my steps anyway.
They had us do health screenings this year and they are flirting with incentives for certain things. Weird thing was, when I did my screening in August I was told by both the doc and his nurse that my blood pressure was low, and has always been low and not an issue. It's usually around 120/80 or so. When I got my results back from the health screening, the insurance people said that was a number to be concerned with. Which totally doesn't make any sense. When I was in the hospital last week they were concerned with my bp being too low, especially coming out of surgery. SOme of those charts and numbers they come up with do not make sense.
Hoff, I thought me riding 50 - 60 miles a week was pretty good. Damn.
Need a new bike next year I think. My schwinn is going on 4 years old.

I was doing a lot of cycling, triatholons and adventure racing. Since I had to give up running, and we don't have a pool nearby, cycling has been my "thing." I'm also in the market for a new bike. I just sold my road bike so I'm limited to the mountain bike. It's heavier and slower, which is why my mileage is down. Still a good workout, but a long ride just takes too darn long. New bike after the new year. I'm thinking steel. What are you thinking about getting?

I dunno. The bike I have now isn't fancy, it's just a schwinn hybrid. For the most part, the biking i do is on pavement and I rarely go off road with it any more. But I don't want a pure road bike. I kinda like the upright seating on the hybrid/comfort bike. And I'm not going to be doing any racing or competing any time soon. I'd like something a little more reliable though. Seems like I'm always fixing something on mine. Plus, I need something sturdy for when I run over little asian kids at the metro park.

Trek FX line has a lot of options. Specialized has Sirrus, and Giant has some nice offerings. I've been looking hard at the Jamis. Coda is a steel frame. Pretty solid and well made. They have the Allegro, which is the same geometry as the Coda, but in an aluminum frame.

Not sure. I only paid like $300 for my schinns but I expect to spend more for something of higher quality.

Not sure. I only paid like $300 for my schinns but I expect to spend more for something of higher quality. You can get into any of the bikes I mentioned for $500. The Jamis Allegro is (base) $520. The Trek FX series starts at $379 for a 7.0, and goes up from there. The Sirrus starts at $520, which specs about the same as the 7.3 in the Trek. If you want some deals, here's a link with other options. The downside is you need to know what size you need and how to make adjustments (seat, changing stems) on your own. But the prices are outstanding. You can get a much higher spec than you can get in the bikes I mentioned. www.bikesdirect.com/products/hybrid_bikes.htm

I'd like to get one of those someday.
