Something interesting. In the press conference last week Mayhew said that they had offered Sims a deal but never heard back from him. The quote I read from alway after the trade was the Mayhew had called him about ManRam two weeks ago. ManRam was the reason the Lions took the Broncos offer of the 3 that he had. Tomlinson was their highest rated player on the board, and they risked losing him if they traded down. ManRam was insurance if someone else took Tomlinson.

Maybe Sims was pissed they waited until almost May to ask. Then again it's not like anyone else was beating down his door. I think we ended up better off in the long run but if it were me I'd rather be employed.

After May 12, any FA you sign doesn't affect the comp picks for the guys you lost this year. Teams are waiting for that date to sign guys. It's why there hasn't been many signings I. The recent days.
Why sign Sims and degrade their comp pick? Just wait and sign him then. Sims has to know this.

I've slept on it, and I still fricken hate this pick. It's not the player, it's the fact that they got a guard in the trade, and then went and drafted one!. They could have drafted M Brown, and addressed both sides of the ball in one round!
Brown had a mid first round draft grade. I don't care that Tomlinson was the #1 guard, he still had a late second round draft grade. This still looks like a reach, and they didn't maximize value in the first round.

I love the pick. Two maulers at guard like the old cowboy teams.

Since we have a ton of time before tonight.
If you're the Lions, would you take a flyer on La'el Collins on Day 3?
I realize everyone considers him undraftable, but someone is going to take him. Too much talent to not use a 7th on.
They draft guys playing baseball just to hold their rights.
Me, I use the 6th.

I love the pick. Two maulers at guard like the old cowboy teams. Yeah, the old Cowboys teams that played in a much different NFL, than the NFL of today. That was during the golden era for RBs. Today it is a QB and passing league.

Today it is a QB and passing league. It will be nice though if they can develop some kind of meaningful running game. Keeping Stafford upright would be a huge plus too after last year.

So you lose a 6th or 7th that Mayhew wastes anyway.

Sounds like a NFL poster child... Draft him, hire some legal assassins, do Jedi mind tricks about gloves not fitting and then have him ready for camp

I know there's a broadcast delay. I figured it was seconds and not 10-15 minutes. It isn't a broadcast delay. The way it worked goes like this: Once a team turns in their card, the 31 other teams are notified and the next team goes on the clock right away. ESPN and NFL Network are notified of the pick so they can have the video reel ready. Once the networks are ready the Commish goes out to announce the pick. Make sense? If they delay the picks being announced the talking heads can draw the broadcast out which equals more commercials. Twitter was 2-3 picks ahead from the middle of the 1st til the end of the broadcast.

Im happy with the Tomlinson pick. I'm fine with the ManRam trade before it too. we needed some interior line depth.
Go get a DT in rd 2 and then either a CB or Rb in round 3 and i'll be thrilled with this draft so far. Plus we have ammo to trade up in two 5th rounders in case someone slips that we like.

Thrilled with the trade and Tomlinson. The Lions had 0 LGs on the roster coming into the draft. You pick up two in the first round and additional picks? Fantastic. I didn't like Malcolm Brown very much at all... I think you can pick up a DT of equal quality in rounds 2 or 3. Now the Lions have two roadgraders on the line and any RB they get should benefit from that along with Stafford.

The Cowboys were one play away from the NFC Championship game against the team they beat earlier in the year. Detroit took a big step into finally being serious about the run game.

Denver must like a back up a lot with Kubiak coming back. Denver's run blocking is always on point.

The Lions may have the two biggest guards in the league now. All the football people in the media seem to love it too. Mayhew actually turned a weakness into a strength by getting two starting caliber guys with one pick.

I like Tomlinson, I just disagree with Mayhews thought process and how he used that pick. It's not the first time.

They offered Sims the contract as free agency started. Whatever. He's gone.
Psycz, resigning your own players does not factor into the comp pick formula. It's players you lose and players you take from other teams.
