Cable tv's days are numbered if they don't significantly drop prices. They aren't structured to do that so it won't happen. I think we'll eventually see significant increases in internet prices and decreases in tv subscriptions so we'll probably still be paying the same.

Just re-upped my directv for 82.50/month with free HBO for 6 months. Locked in for a year. They must be feeling pressure cord cutters. I barely had to threaten to cancel.

I need to do this... I was going to wait until I sold my house though and then I feel like I have more leverage with canceling versus transferring. If they don't give what I want, then when I move to the new place, I'll just get a new promo service under the wife's name

I was only out the last promo offer for a month. Just have the dish network promo offer in hand.

I'm still somewhat tempted to cut the cord as well. Can't do it now cause it would be a PITA... but once gave moved it may be easier

From Tampa to Clearwater. Had a chance to move back to Michigan a few months back and when the offer was official, and the opportunity became real – I have to be honest and admit that a wave of anxiety came over both the wife and I. If we could have made the move four or five years ago before our kids became entrenched in their school and we started developing more complex relationships with their friends and their families – we would've done it in a heartbeat. Now, we've developed such a unique sense of community with these families that would be tough to give up. Especially after hearing stories of friends who have kids the same age about the issues they have with the soccer mom politics and such at the kids school.
Now, we are opting to try to find a bigger house with a bigger yard that's closer to their school.

I like Palm Harbor a lot... but it pushes the distance a bit too much to the school

I don't think I could pull the trigger on move from Florida to Michigan unless I was unemployed.

The struggle has always been proximity to family. Plus we kept close with all our old friends. So whenever we came back in town, it was very nostalgic and like old times... which increased the desire to head back.
Now that the social network has increased more here and other intangibles are coming into play- it's balanced the desire to come back more.
I still day dream about coming back and taking advantage of the lower cost of living. We are looking at houses that around around 3500-3800 sqft here on 1/2 acre lots for $600-700k. In Michigan I could have a 3000sqft house on the Portage chain of lakes for that price... and it would even come with a basement.
The lack of relationship with the kids and the grandparents will alway be a challenge though

Joe & Hoff, can't blame either of you. My brother lives down near you Joe, he & his family love it. Florida & Texas are both great states to live in, enjoy every minute of it.

If you and your wife are making 200,000 each, you'll pay 17,000 in state income tax, plus 10,000 property tax on a 600k house. In Florida you would probably only pay 5,000 of property tax and no income tax. Your boy trump and Ryan also plan to take away the state tax deduction, so that will make it even worse. One of my neighbors just put a 3,300 sq ft house on the market for 588,000. If you want cheaper housing, go to Texas.

The California migration to the silicon prairie is driving their housing costs through the roof. (Pardon the pun)

Of course there are definitely pockets in certain areas where the price per square foot is equal, but you don't have to go as far outside those metro areas to get good bang for the buck.
Tampa/Clearwater is most reasonable compared to Naples or the entire east coast from Miami to Melbourne.
