Well, Igor Grigorenko comes to mind... Though I'm not sure if that's what you had in mind when you made this thread.

Typically for a prospect to "bust," he needs to be taken with a high draft pick; and (fortunately) the Wings haven't had too many of those in my lifetime (I'm 25). So Grigorenko is really the only Wings' prospect in my lifetime that had a large amount of buzz behind him and never produced anything on the ice... but that was more of a tragedy than an outright bust.
In the same vein, Jiri Fischer was only just starting to live up to his potential when he suffered his heart attack.
But in a strictly on-ice sense, Johan Franzen is probably the closest thing to a "bust" the Wings have had, and that's only because of the contract they gave him.

its probably joe murphy because he was #1 overall , however that was not a great draft class. Probably from the top 10 only brian leetch and vinnie damphouse had better careers

Thomas McCollum was the last pick in the 1st round that year and was the top rated goalie ... if he is the biggest bust in the wings draft history than they must be doing something right. Jesse wallin was also the last pick of the first round

Joe Murphy had a couple 30 goal seasons and averaged over 50 points a season. I wouldnt call him a bust.

for a #1 overall , you would hope to get more production than that, however, it wasnt a get top end draft class, ( except leetch and damphouse )

Murphy had huge hype coming in and could barely crack the lineup for the Wings.

Id say Yan Golubovsky and Korey Kocur were bigger busts.

IIRC, he played parts of 4 seasons in Detroit and scored less than 15 goals. Not exactly the production you'd expect from #1 overall. Maybe you can make a case that he's not the biggest red wings bust, but he's gotta be in the top 3.
