Figured I would start a new thread for the 2016 off-season and Draft. As usual the draft is our super bowl this year. The off-season should also be a little different given the fact that management/coaching is in limbo and The Lions do have some money to spend. There is also the big question of whether or not to cut Calvin Johnson. Here are a few jumping off points in no order of importance: - If he doesn't take a pay cut, should The Lions cut Calvin Johnson and save roughly 12 million?
- Before any cuts The Lions have roughly 20mil. in Cap Space. Who should they target?
- Will they look to lock up a couple of players that could become FA's in 2017? (Slay,Ansah,Warford,Riddick,Martin)
- Who is your ideal GM and/or Coaching candidate right now?
- What are some other possible cuts you would like to see?
- In the draft, it appears The Lions will be picking somewhere between pick 9 and 18. As it stands today, pre-combine who are some guys to keep on the radar? What about later rounds?
- What will they do with Stafford?
I'm sure I'm missing a few things but just wanted to throw a couple of things out there to get started.

They have 20 mil in space, but need to fill roster spots with depth guys and need to make decisions on guys like Fuller, Moore, Orlovsky ( or a backup in general), Lewis, Whitehead, Quddus, Walker, Manram, Jason Jones and Ngata. all obviously wont be re-signed, but signing all those guys will eat amost your whole 20 mil.
answering your Q's from my perspective:
I bet Cj stays, smart or not 20 mil addressed above.. its misleading hope so no idea on GM, coach is probably Gase Hope they target a backup QB somewhere in this draft, since theyve ignored it for years. DT or OL in first round hopefully. Dont have any specific names in mind They'll keep him. I dont see any scenario in which they dont.

WRs available in round 2? I'll never trust this team.

I think Calvin stays, but I would hope they can get a 2nd round pick for him. I have seen and heard that the Lions will end up with $30 Million in Cap space at the end of the season. I have 2 targets in FA. 1 is Cordy Glenn, and if he doesn't hit the market, Alex Mack. Players I think should be gone after this year without consideration of bringing them back: Tulloch, Ihedigbo, and Mathis on the defense. I think that Whitehead can take over in the middle. I would try and find a veteran 3rd or 4th CB in FA cheap. With Slay as the 1, you should get your 2nd and 3rd CB out of Lawson, Diggs, and Carter. On offense, I would let go of Joique Bell and Pettigrew. I have always liked Pettigrew, but the tear of the ACL may end his career. To replace him I would bring back Bear Pascoe on the cheap. It looks like TJ Jones is on the upswing, and he could be a nice little find. Ameer and Riddick are a nice combo out of the backfield, and Zenner looks like he could fill Bell's limited role. This team needs to find a LT and kick Reiff over to the right side. For GM I really like Omar Kahn from Pittsburgh. The only downside to him is that he has no scouting in his background. Xanders will be gone, apparently he has been the person that has been the biggest leak of information. I like Eric DeCosta out of Baltimore, and Duke Tobin would be a great hire. I am also curious to see if Pioli gets another look. We have talked about coaches before, and I like Hue Jackson. I think Stafford is here until the end of his contract.
Something interesting that Mike O'Hara recently said. The Lions team is galvanized behind Caldwell more than any coach he has seen since Wayne Fontes. Say what you want about his coaching ability (it is terrible and I think he should be fired) but there is something to be said about the fact that the players really like playing for the guy. My problem is that Teryl Austin will probably get a job next year as a Head Coach. If the new GM is intent on keeping this staff together (not my first option), I would elevate Austin to HC and let Caldwell go.

PFF thinks the Lions have the 9th best secondary?

As much as I have bagged on the Lions, I believe that team is not that bad as it currently stands. They need to focus on the O line and everything defense, IMO. Cutting Calvin or not, I don't care. But I do believe they have to keep Stafford. I think he is a lot better than people give him credit for, and he has done a good job the 2nd half of the season. If you cut him, you're basically blowing up the team. I don't believe you're going to get a better qb in free agency.
Getting someone who can actually draft for need and position, and not the best player available, is very important. The next GM and coach are going to be key in that. I'd like to see someone focus on building a kick ass defense instead of drafting offensive skill positions every year.

Black Monday is soon here and there no rumor or word on the GM search. Is everyone safe due to the second half performance?

I hope the Lions fire Caldwell (who will be above .500 win or lose today) to only hire a rookie head coach who may be below .500 his first season. That would be comical.

If above five hundred is good enough, that's a joke When you're not playing for championships what else can you gauge a team by? For a fan-base that hasn't won shit you guys sure do have a lot of answers, lmao….

All kinds of articles saying they want to keep the buffoon It was on the ESPN scroll this morning, per Shefter. Says Martha wants to keep Caldwell, but ultimately it's up to the new GM.

There's going to be a lot of NFL head coaching and GM vacancies this year.
I hope we hear a Lions GM announcement within the next 24 hours.

I'm actually much more concerned with getting the right GM in here than worrying about Caldwell.
