I saw a news story on it last year. Doesn't seem very practical yet. They have to convince the cities or states to install sensors along the sides of the roads so that the car knows where to go. That small area at U of M has it already and that's why they're doing the testing there.

That small area at U of M has it already and that's why they're doing the testing there. The article says they are using a combination of gps and onboard (vehicle) lasers. Road sensors are not mentioned in the article. Certainly they don't have sensors in Mountain View, CA where Google is testing, and I know for certain they don't have them in Austin, where Google has opened up a second phase.
