Thanks for the memories. Good luck in Toronto.
Not mad he's leaving. It's time.

Boom, I called this more then a month ago when I was in Toronto to leafs fans. Wings were never serious with an offer to keep him and his antics off the ice showed as much so.

I would hope the Wings weren't serious with their offer if that's what it took to sign him. He'll be on his ass in three years. He'll never live out that deal.

The world called it a year ago seriously, talking to Leafs fans a month ago, the Babs to the Leafs not so much! Maybe his move from the Wings yes, but to Toronto was not on any leafs fan radar.

This had been out there all season. All you had to do was watch HNIC. It was pretty much a given Babs was going to Toronto. They would do whatever was necessary to get him.
As to the Wings offers. They made serious offers. He only made $2 mil his last year from what I found online. Their original offers were $3.25 mil. That's a nice bump. He just wasn't going to get the same number of years here as anywhere else. He'd been here 10 already. Voice gets stale. Offering 5 yrs at the end was a great show of respect. I don't think he would have lasted all 5 if he stayed.

I just find it entertaining that he said his family didnt want to move, he wanted to win now and it wasnt about the money.. It was clearly about the money in the end, mostly because toronto's offer was insane.

I think he gets the Leafs back to the playoffs within 3 yrs.
I think the Wings win a Cup (or two) before the Leafs.

You have to believe that if the Wings truly wanted him back, he'd be back.

I dont know about that.. toronto is paying him more than double what the next highest NHL coach makes over a large timespan

The Wings may or may not have gone that high dollar wise (I don't think they would have) but they were never going to go 8 yrs.
That was the deal breaker right there.

Maybe the Wings didnt want a guy back who hasnt gotten out of the 2nd round in 6 years. In most cities he would be fired. This narrative that has him as a great coach in puzzling.

I think they would have taken him back but not for that money. The offer the Wings gave was very generous. Babs isn't the coach you make the highest paid in league history. It was just the only way they were gonna get him. I believe Ken Holland said something similar to that in his statement after Babs took the other deal.

This narrative that has him as a great coach in puzzling. they dont have a top line defender on the team. thats a major factor. Havent since the mass exodus of Rafalski, Lidstrom and Stuart. I'm ok with him leaving, but lets not pretend he isnt one of the top 3 coaches in the league

He might be a top 3 coach. I'm not sure how you or anyone can say that definitively. Im only pointing out that his success with the wings is ancient history. I mean this is a guy who had tatar out as a healthy scratch and played cleary, tootoo, samuellsen amd bertuzzi.

I dont know about that.. toronto is paying him more than double what the next highest NHL coach makes over a large timespan They could have locked him for 5-8 years at 3-4 million, and I bet he would have taken that deal before anyone else had a chance to offer. If the Wings truly wanted to keep him, they could have upped the years and it would have been done and he would never have gone on his free agent tour.

I mean this is a guy who had tatar out as a healthy scratch and played cleary, tootoo, samuellsen amd bertuzzi. because its the general opinion of every hockey expert. And again, when you have suspect defensive players for 7 straight years, you arent going to have optimal success. Even if it isnt for lack of trying to sign Suter and others.

There was no talk of him veing the best coach until he won in the olympics. Im not surprised that a bunch of Canadian "experts" labeled him the best coach after those 2 gold medals.

youre right and all the hockey experts are wrong.. he's a shitty coach that now makes 6 million a year, more than double the next highest paid coach.
And i'm not talking about canadian experts, the american ones say the same thing.

Only a few of these Leafs fans I'd talked to thought they had a chance at Babs and that was only if the Wings won the cup this year.
