If I were the Patriots I would point out 1 stat.
Score at the end of the first half using deflated footballs: 17-7
Score of the second half of the game after the balls were reinflated: 28-0.
End of story.

So you guys are under the impression that this is the first time they've done this? No one is saying that this was the reason that they won. This coupled with the spying thing certainly looks like they foster a culture of trying to gain every advantage they can think of. Some might find that admirable others think of it as cheating.

I think the Patriots are no better or worse than any other team in the NFL. Belichik has a polarizing personality so it is easy to dislike him. couple that with the fact this is the 6th Superbowl the Pats have been in during the Belechik and Brady era, and they are HUGE targets. Every team tries to get an advantage in some way. Like the team on offense with no timeouts left and down by 3 with less than 1:00 to play who "suddenly" has a player go down with an injury. or kickers compressing the ball prior to punts/kicks. The most telling thing in all this is that the NFL doesn't even think it is that big a deal...they haven't talked to Brady/Belechik. There was no penalty or action during the game other than to properly inflate the balls. The only ones making a big deal about this is the media. And from personal experience, I am sick and frickin tired of the media driving agendas and influencing policy...whether it be sports related, political, or otherwise.

This is (another) black mark on the NFL and Goodell. Goodell is possibly the most powerful man in sports. You'd think he'd be on the phone with ESPN, telling them to calm the fack down and to tone it down. Because they are damaging the shield, and damaging the Superbowl.

Yeah, this isn't the same thing as your two examples. There is a time run off for the injury instance you mention and there were "kicking only" footballs introduced for the second. This is one team deflating the ball so it is easier to grip by QBs/RBs and easier to catch for receivers in rainy conditions to gain an advantage. And the NFL has interviewed over 40 people so far (according to reports) concerning this issue so they at least believe it is worth investigating. This is not something that should be ignored or swept under the rug. Even if it was their first incident, it should be investigated and punished based on the findings of the report. Considering it isn't their first incident, punishment may need to be more severe as it would seem they don't really care about the previous punishment. I really don't care about Belichek's personality and it doesn't factor into my thoughts on this. I think his curmudgeon act is pretty hilarious actually.

The NFL is only checking into it because the media is making such a huge deal out of it. Everyone is trying to get an advantage, the Pats just got caught. It's not cheating until you get caught. NASCAR crew chiefs get fined and suspended all the time for unapproved parts and measurements. Every sport is doing it.

This is so stupid. It happens naturally since they check the damn things at room temp. Not the 2lbs as in this case, but it happens.
How soft were the balls in GB for their game the week before? If checked at 12.5lbs in the locker room, game temp was what mid teens? How soft once they got cold.
They want them between 13.5 and 12.5, check the damn things outside in the playing elements 30 minutes before game time. Lock them up until play starts.
Problem solved.

I don't think they really care. It's one of those rules nobody checks up on. The media just got ahold of it and it was the Patriots. So here we are.

This is like pitchers using pinetar when it's cold to help with pitches. Everyone knows it happens. Almost are ok with it. They'd rather not get beaned.
Don't be ridiculous or blatant about it and its fine.
The NFL is happy it happens. They want scoring. Better game for the tv audience. Makes more money. Now they're stuck having to deal with it.
They didn't make it out of any weekend without controversy in the playoffs.
