I've never seen a DT's weight analyzed as much as with Fairley. How much does Wilfork weigh?

Wilfork is probably around 325. He can also dunk a basketball. Dude is a freak of nature.

Fairley's on his rookie deal.. of course he's getting a raise. A raise to be paid like the top 3-5 DT's in the NFL? You're just as dumb as eruff if you think so. No one is paying him more than $5mill/yr What are you basing your fact's on saying 5 mil a season is top 3-5 DT money? If youre talking base you may have a point, but we all know the NFL enough to know that contracts are flooded with incentives, roster bonus, and of course a signing bonus.
That being said 7 mil a season isnt top 3-5 DT money. 4 yrs @ 22m would be equal to the 10th highest contract at DT

With Fairley I think the issue for him in FA will be the length of any deal he is offered. He is coming off a serious injury and his weight was an issue in the past. I think he did a good job controlling his weight after that all came out earlier in the year but still I don't think any team is going to offer him a long term deal unless it has a ton on incentives. How do incentive laden deals effect the cap?

Okay he's 350. Regardless he has nothing to do with Fairley. His weight was obviously affecting his performance since The Lions basically came out and told everyone he was out of shape.

I'm saying weight is meaningless. He could be in shape for the position at 300, 310 or 320. Easiest way for him to lose weight is to burn off muscle. Stupid incentive.

Incentive laden deals are broken out in two ways: "Likely to be earned" and "Not likely to be earned".
A Likely to be earned incentive counts against your cap now, and if the incentive is not earned, the team gets a cap credit which can be carried over.
For a not likely to be earned incentive, you can use up the cap space, but then you have to clear the space if the player earns the incentive.

How do incentive laden deals effect the cap? It's already accounted for up front before signing and it's usually a roster bonus, signing bous, a workout bonus (which is a pre-season bonus I assume), but other incentives regarding an DT im unaware about. Base + bonus = cap hit

That's because the Lions are a second tier franchise. Wilfork and many others DT are always over weight during OTA's pre pre-season. Hell McCoy comes in overweight and it falls off during OTA's

Incentives can be for any number of things. One example is making Pro Bowl/All Pro. Another that is usually big is % of snaps played. That is essentially a "stay healthy" bonus. A third is just a bonus that is tied to a statistic. The D-Lineman for the Jags just hit one of those in the last game of the season on a game clinching play. The Sack he had ended up triggering a $250,000 bonus.

One of the teams that interviewed Teryl Austin said to Peter King that coming into the interview they thought he was one year away from being a HC, but left the interview extremely impressed with his state at readiness to be a head coach.

I think owners/management have one of two schools of thought: 1. go with an established former coach or 2. roll the dice on someone new. It seems like there are those franchises that will only hire a guy who's done it before, and then there are others like the Falcons, that get a little bit sick and tired of the retread game.

I am not sure any of the established guys want anything to do with Dmitroff and Pioli in Atlanta.

Mike Smith wasn't a retread HC.
