The Lions have about $20 Million in bonus money left on Stafford that counts against the cap. When I looked at it last night it broke down to 9 Million coming off in 2015, 5.5 Million in 2016, and 5.5 Million in 2017. Those are the important numbers to consider when we talk about cutting/trading him.
If they trade him, the entire 20 Million is accelerated and absorbed in the 2015 Cap year.
If he is cut and designated a June 1 Cut, the Lions absorb 10 Million in 2015 and 10 Million in 2016.
If he is traded at the end of next season, the Lions absorb 11 Million in the 2016 Cap year.
If he is cut as the end of next season, the Lions can either eat the entire 11 Million in 2016, or designate him a June 1 cut and absorb 5.5 in 2016 and 5.5 in 2017.

Seems like you are sort of "done" with him. Accurate?

I am 90% done with him. If I were GM I would be looking at what opportunities I have to upgrade over the next two years. A lot of it is going to come down to how next season goes. He is never going to be great, but will have great moments. Maybe he turns it around next year if the Line play in front of him can improve. Too many ifs though.

I'm sure there is a zero chance of upgrade over the next two years. The free agent guys are garbage and you're not trading up to pick a QB.

They don't have to trade up to get one.

Now that we're all ready to cut and run from Staffdong, he'll go out and have the game of his life against Dallas and the Lions will win.

Eli > Stafford. Romo > Stafford The first one is a Joke, right?

Joe. It is not a joke. Eli, for all his foibles, is a much better QB than Stafford.

I'm also basically done with Stafford at this point. I don't think he's complete garbage like some say but he's just not good enough to take a team to the next level. Only thing that would change me now is if he got hot in the playoffs and led them to an NFC Championship game.

If they had a really good oline, solid running game and decent special teams, he'd be good enough with this defense.

jrolla: I agreee. Stafford's ceiling is in the 8-10 range, and his play has been in the 12-16 range.

How much of his contract is guaranteed? I'd say give him one more year, but I have concerns that he has reached his ceiling. I don't know if it's prudent to cut bait with him, but they may want to start looking towards the draft this spring or next, to take a QB. You have concerns that he's reached his ceiling now? Try he hit his ceiling 2 years and has regressed ever since. He can't read defenses half the time and can't find or hit his open receivers the other half.

He misses wide open receivers way too often.

I would take that debate. Eli's barely 3rd tier.
Too much butt hurt in this thread. Fact is our fanbase is fickle and despite not winning shit for 20+ years- we have this weird sense of entitlement. Stafford is not an elite QBR like Bree's (who sucks this year), Peyton, Brady or Rogers... He's not really even 2nd tier (though he has flashes) like Homo, Luck, Big Ben or Rivers.
He's towards the top of the 3rd tier. I'd take him over Alex Smith, Palmer, Ryan, Fitz, Flacco or Cutler all day. I would probably take Wilson over him though.

i see where he's coming from. 20 years of "if we just had a qb who wasn't terrible, and could manage a game..." - then you get one, and people are pissed he's not aaron rodgers.
ignoring the fact that rodgers would suck taking snaps from that turnstile for 5 years.
