So what happens if another team signs him to a contract? Can the pistons reduce what they owe him by that contract? Does that have any impact on the pistons cap hit? nope. That was the amnesty provision and it no longer exists. This was STUPID move. Cool, just making sure.

They will use the stretch provision though so will lower his cap number by about half but will increase the years that he will count against their cap for twice as long.

When he was putting up massive numbers they were not winning. The Bulls didn't win until he got better teammates. MJ would not win with this current Piston squad. uhhh im sure he had a hand in 5 victories by his dammd self during those horribull years btw iz dat a hitler stash

I agree that it sucks not to get anything for him, but I won't call it stupid. I don't think they were going to get a lot for him, without giving up picks and taking on more bad money. Enough of the band aids trying to fix this. Cut the fat, and start working towards the future. Plus it further cements SVG as ruler and executioner.
And Smith will be picked up immediately.

I am guessing that is the goal but paying someone to go away isn't really a good precedent. In fact, Josh gets more money and the opportunity to choose who he plays for. Sounds more like a reward.

I know. SVG has said that he wanted a chance to coach him first, that's why they didn't trade him to SAC. Gotta think that Smith was much worse than SVG thought, and there had to be concern for his effect on the other players.

Not making a deal that was offered and then cutting for nothing 3 mos later is stupid.

Twitter saying that Smith isn't taking calls from teams who aren't playoff bound.

Everything I read suggested that teams were willing to trade for Smith, but only if the Pistons also included a first-round pick. They're obviously trying to rebuild, so I'm guessing the draft pick means a lot more to them than the cap space.
Smith is such a damn enigma...nothing seems to be able to keep him from playing basketball like a idiot. He's 6'9, 230, with plenty of skills, and he's still an above-average athlete, even by NBA standards. And yet he's shooting .391/.243/.468 on the year. Those are the ugliest percentages I've ever seen for a guy who leads his team in usage.
I'm just curious who ends up getting more PT after this, because I'm 99% sure it isn't to get Tony Mitchell on the floor. Is it to get more time for Jerebko and Singler, because that's no fun. Maybe they figure out a way to get Dinwiddie in the rotation?

Fat Pat should not have been giving GM role. Nothing he has done has shown him worthy of that. Before he got to Detroit or since.

FYI I think we'll see a lot more focus on KCP and Dinwiddle, with Drummond, Monroe, and Signler starting at the forward positions. Jennings will still start, but they gotta get Spencer some run to see if he's the PG of the future

I like how smith referenced the "basketball IQ" he was bringing to the rockets. I've never seen a dumber basketball player than smith.

I think he seriously also said something about defensive toughness. I thought I was reading the onion.
