Yea Josh Hembolt of rivals basically said this kid is just a guy, not a lot of upside for a low ranked kid. may be a reach I suppose. With such a small class, why would they take "just a guy"?

Maybe given the kids size and frame- he could easily pack on another 30-40lbs and carry it well. He looks quick and like he has coordinated feet... But he likely lacked coaching in high school and Harbaugh thinks he can coach him up

He's obviously the best of what's left at OL from the coaches viewpoint. Maybe 2 star OL are better than the 5 stars that suck we currently have.

Here is a list of other 2-star players (according to Rivals) UM has signed over the last few years, not including kickers:
2014 - Brady Pallante - DT - Has not played yet 2013 - Scott Sypniewski - LS - 12 games this year 2012 - Ben Braden - starting LT - Rivals actually has him as 0 stars, so I don't know what the deal is 2010 - Ray Vinopal - S - actually saw time as a true frosh under RichRod. Transferred to Pitt. 2009 - Adrian Witty - Never qualified. Had a decent career at Cincinnati. 2008 - Patrick Omameh - Listed as DE, developed into All-B1G lineman. Started 16 games for the Buccaneers this year. 2007 - Marell Evans - LB - Played on special teams a bit, transferred to Hampton to help with his family. Came back to UM in 2011, but didn't play. 2005 - Andre Criswell - RB - Don't think he ever played. 2004 - Marques Walton - DT - Played 4 games for UM. Transferred to Southern Illinois. 2003 - Brandent Englemon - ATH - Turned into a solid safety.
But maybe it's more appropriate to look at the Harbaugh/Drevno track record with 2-star players when they were at Stanford (2007-2010)
2007 Chike Amajoyi - RB - Played 37 games as an LB, including 17 starts Matt Bentler - OL - Backup who played in about a dozen games George Halamandaris - OL - Backup who played a handful of games Taylor Skaufel - DB - Depth guy who played in more than 30 games Tom Keiser - DE - Played a ton. Racked up 19.5 sacks for Stanford, and 9 more in the NFL for Carolina, Arizona, and San Diego Owen Marecic - RB - Played FB and MLB for Stanford at the same time, and was drafted in the 4th round Doug Baldwin - WR - Caught 96 passes over 4 years. Undrafted, but basically Seattle's best WR right now. Max Bergen - LB - Backup who played in more than 30 games
2008 Quinn Evans - DB - Special Teams guy who played in more than 20 games. Transferred to Northwestern. Sam Schwartzstein - OL - Started a bunch of games at Center. Was 2nd-team All Pac-12 Padric Scott - DT - Ended up at Florida A&M. Was on an NFL practice squad or two. Marcus Turner - DB - Transferred to San Diego Alex Debniak - LB - Played a bunch. Named All Pac-12 honorable mention. Briefly on the 49ers Johnson Bademosi - Three-year starter at CB. Has 25 career tackles for the Cleveland Browns
2009 Terrence Brown - DB - Played three seasons for Stanford, left for the NFL. Undrafted. Ben Gardner - DE - Three Year starter, All-Conference awards, 7th-round NFL pick.
2010 Cleophus Robinson - DB - Can't find info.
That's kind of an amazing track record with 2-star players, although only one of the offensive lineman really panned out. Still, I'm willing to trust this coaching staff in this case.

0 stars on Rivals means no evaluation....thats what happens when suddenly a kid with 0 stars gets signed by a name program, then a Rivals guy goes gets the tape and does an evaluation and it seems a bit fishy.

I don't really care if he's a -1 star. As long as Harbaugh and staff want him, I'm in.
The stars are bullsh1t.

Especially with lineman. I think MSU has a couple guys who were 0 stars, one even a walkon who is playing well. Both Glasgows were a walkons and both produce.

Sounds like UM is in good shape with the DE/TE Jake Pickard, and another DE has popped up on the radar: Name | From | Ht/Wt | Pos | Rivals | Scout | 24/7 | ESPN | Notes | DaiShon Neal
| Omaha, NE
| 6'7, 245
| DE
| 3*
| 3*
| 3*
| 3*
| Nebraska commit
|
ESPN Says I don't know if anything will come of this. The kid is from Omaha and committed to Nebraska, and he recently dropped Oregon and Oklahoma from contention. But apparently he's considering UM, so who knows? EDIT: Aaaaannnd it looks like he's going to announce for Nebraska tomorrow.

Another name has popped up though! Yet another big defensive back: Name | From | Ht/Wt | Pos | Rivals | Scout
| 24/7 | ESPN | Notes | Colin Samuel
| Mission Hills, CA
| 6'2, 180
| DB
| 4*
| 4*
| 3*
| 3*
| Committed to UCLA. Visiting 1/30
|
Scout Says ESPN says This kid is HS teammates with stud Iman Marshall, and while it's fun to think about a package deal, it seems more likely that Harbaugh convinced the kid to come visit while having his in-home with Marshall today. I'm a bit skeptical about this kid being a 4-star talent because his only other prominent offers are from UCLA, where he committed in early December, and Oklahoma. His hudl film does look pretty solid though. EDIT: Why do I even bother with this shit? Kid already cancelled his visit.

Neal's father threw Mattison out of his house last night after he told him that Neal couldn't get into college without football.

Yeah, sounds like there was some serious miscommunication there. I don't think UM can comment about it, but I find it really hard to believe they'd come into the house of a kid they want and insult him in any way.

Might have been better to keep Manning instead Mattison. eh I look at it as the kid being a diva why would they publicly bitch about it, knowing UM can't say anything regarding a football recruit I was against a lot of what Dery was saying yesterday on the radio, about kids being divas and their parents allowing them to act like it, but the more I read some of the recruiting stories, I'm sure this is the case most of the time

Mattison was retained because he is such a great recruiter. Can't imagine he would say something like this to a recruit. Not with his track record. Kid is acting like an entitled diva, and based on his comments, glad he isn't coming.

I'm sure whatever Mattison said was worded poorly, but if he is stating the truth, I'm sorry that the family and the recruit was offended...was what he said not the truth?

What Mattison probably said...."this is a great opportunity to attend a university that you ordinary might not have access to." Yet the family heard...."you probably wouldn't have be able to get in without football?"

What else should he have said? Come to Michigan so you don't end up being an unemployed fuck up like your dad. Sometimes it's best to not tell the truth.

So, quick recap as to where UM stands:
DaiShon Neal - DE - Firm to Nebraska Will Lockett - CB - Firm to UCLA Colin Samuel - CB - Firm to UCLA Nate Dalton - CB - Firm to Arkansas John Kelly - ATH - Firm to Tennessee Reagan Williams - RB/LB - Firm to Stanford
Chris Clark - TE - Supposedly 50/50 with UCLA. I'm guessing he goes to Cali, but even if he comes I don't know if he'll last. Big Alex Legion vibe with him Tyrone Wheatley Jr. - TE/DE - Doesn't sound great for UM. Probably heading to USC Mike Weber - RB - Won't rule out a last-minute flip, but almost certainly headed to Ohio State Damon Arnette - CB - There's a shot, but likely to stick with South Carolina Iman Marshall - CB - Pipe dream...99% sure he's going to USC Ryan Davis - WR - Very unlikely, unless he visits Roquan Smith - LB - Solid chance, but unlikely Auden Tate - WR - Probably gonna fall short to FSU Shelton Johnson - DE - Likely to FSU Matt Snyder - TE - Sounds like there's a chance, but my guess is that he sticks with Nebraska Chris Williamson - CB - Not a ton of info about him. Sounds like he'll head to North Carolina or Georgia Keith Washington - DB - Just offered last night. Committted to Cal a few days ago. No idea
Jarius Adams - CB - Rutgers commit visiting this weekend. Likely flip Jake Pickard - DE/TE - Wisconsin commit, but many expect him to flip to UM
I'm sure a few more names will pop up in the next 7 days, and there may be a surprise or two on signing day, but in the end this class will be pretty underwhelming, I think. The 2016 class might be something really special though, judging by how many top recruits are really interested in Michigan now that Harbaugh is there.

I think that this class was never going to be that great with 12-15 open spots available, given all the lows of the decommittees, I don't think we were expecting much from it
